I’m heading off to Hamilton Island this Tuesday and I’m writing to you from a stationary train carriage on our property 4 hours north of Sydney where we have relocated.
At the start of August, we had to move from our amazing home in Monterey next to Sydney Airport, which we’ve been in for the past 3 years.
This house was quite literally 50m from the beach, it had a double garage, massive back yard (for city living standards), and 3 neat bedrooms. The kitchen and bathroom were old school – vintage some call it, and the loungeroom was pretty small but cosy. All in all, this was the perfect house for us to live in, 20 minutes from the city by public transport with all the facilities in short driving distance.
I’m describing all this because we had it made. So when the time came that the owners had to sell, we had to make a decision as to where to move to next.
What I’m about to share with you can have a massive impact on your life.
So firstly, I had to think of all the options – pluses and minuses. On one hand we could move to the Blue Mountains which is closer to family. On the other hand we could move to Gosford so we’re closer to the city but still out of it (boring) and the other option was to move to Geelong (Melbourne).
I liked the Blue Mountains and Geelong options but still both these options would mean that I would be traveling to and from work for 2 1/2 hours each day.
In the back of my mind, I knew that I wanted to spend more time with Giselle and the kids, to spend more time on my business and to play more golf. All the options I had weren’t going to be able to meet my expectation. So when sitting in my local cafe before work one day with Giselle and the kids, I said I’ve had enough and cracked it. I was so fed up with the stress that comes along with working in an office and commuting to work everyday, I said there must be a better way, we just need to think of it.
After Giselle had calmed me down, she said, why dont we just move to the farm?
Now Giselle’s Mum and her Husband have a plant nursery 4 hours from Sydney and 2 hours from Newcastle. Its on a massive plot of land, with a few mountain ranges & 2 houses. We had contemplated living there many times, but it would mean I had to either quit my job or work remotely. Boom. This was it. This was my opportunity to escape the rat race.
Now some of you reading this might be in a similar boat to where I was 4 weeks ago and you may not know how to make the jump. I want to give you a few lessons I have learnt over the past 3 years leading up to this, many of the lessons I’ve learned through the SFM community, on how I was able to escape the rat race and essentially live a Laptop Lifestyle.
First Lesson: Provide more value to your current boss than they can handle. This is under rated big time. Give them ideas on how to improve systems within their business, record training videos for new employees to quickly get up to speed with procedures, Research technology that can improve systems, organise employee events or team bonding sessions like drinks after work or lunchtime outings. There’s hundreds of ways to help your boss (lifting his/her load)
Second Lesson: Plant the seed that you want to work remotely early on. I have to mention that this was almost 2 years in the making. I wasnt sure how it would all pane out although I always dropped hints of how I would be able to work remotely and outlined the benefits that my boss would receive.
Third Lesson: Stay focused on what you want. This is essentially the law of attraction. The Law of Attraction states that if you identify what you want, then put all your attention into it, then it will come about. Its important to remember that you want the Words going on in your internal dialogue are working for you. What Do I Want? these four words are the most powerful words you can say to yourself. This sets wheels in motion to create your Thoughts and most of them are going to be positive which is the ultimate goal you want to reach – a positive Feeling. The feelings are the vibrating force that pulls like for like feelings into your life. Thats how the Law of Attraction works.
So thats me for today. I hope you’re feeling better about where you’re heading after reading this. Feel free to comment or share so more people can become aware that its much easier to escape the rate race than you think, just start asking yourself; What Do I Want? and magic will happen. You’ll move closer to what you want in no time at all.
